In rethinking their modest Glebe terrace, the clients wanted more room for their growing family, a light-filled, functional home on a small footprint, with a chic interior that would age well over time.
A prior renovation had added a detached studio at the rear, creating a trapped courtyard, and robbing the house of key views west across the district. Our strategy to streamline and open up involved removing the studio, restoring the heritage facade and front room, and designing a tailored rear addition, with bedrooms and bathrooms above, and open living space below, flowing out to a new sunny terrace embracing the view.
Inside, the finely crafted palette of materials includes warm blond brickwork, oak joinery and flooring, natural stone and custom plaster finishes. Light and shadows are masterfully managed throughout with a glass ceiling along the kitchen’s brick wall and a deep skylight over the stairwell.
The practical is made beautiful with a bespoke bathtub scalloped into this compact room, sunlit from above.
Soft, sheer curtains are recessed into ceiling pelmets to maximise spatial volume in the compact terrace.
